Fixing Macbooks that Apple refuses to repair. MacBook Pro dead – No power & not charging. Upon connecting USB-C power with an in-line ammeter this Mac was taking just 5 volts and 0 Amps indicating a short to ground on both USB-C ports. Having removed the logic board after a quick visual inspection the issue was apparent, with a hole blown in one of the Chips responsible for charge – CD3215.
For each charge port there will be a CD3215 chip, these chips communicate with each other – If one is not working, none will work. Upon removing the affected chip, beneath it was scorched, and the data lines missing. Some jump wire was laid with fresh pads and then coated to secure and insulate.
A fresh CD3215 was taken from a donor board and reballed. Having then soldered it back on.
We test the logic board and we have 20 volts and a healthy 600 milliamps. Low amps as no battery is connected, and no screen connected. Buttoned back up into the case and we have a charging powered-up Mac again, all at a fraction of the cost of Apple and no data loss.
