Apple MacBook Pro M1 no power

thermal imaging

Apple MacBook Pro M1 came into us dead with no power.

Apple had quoted our customer silly money to replace the logic board. With these models, the storage is soldered onto the logic board. To recover the data the computer needs to be working.

There are many power rails, starting at 20 volts, and going all the way down to 1.2 volts. With the logic board removed and connected to power, using a multimeter each power rail was tested for the correct voltage until we found the ‘dead’ rail which was shorted out.

Voltage is then injected into the affected rail, and under the thermal imaging camera, a faulty capacitor lit up. On removing it, the short was gone.

The capacitor was replaced and we have a fully functioning MacBook. As ever at a fraction of the price of Apple, who can not repair things and refuse to.
