On plugging in the charger with an in-line ammeter, 20 volts with 0 amps draw was observed. This indicates a short circuit / failed component on the USB-C charge and power circuit.
Power was applied, and thermal imaging showed the USB-C controller getting warm.
From the schematics, there are 2 MOSFETs that feed into the controller chip of which one had failed.
On bypassing the bad MOSFET power was restored. We couldn’t replace the failed MOSFET as this particular type is only available from China with a high chance that it’ll be fake, hence the bypass.
All works complete upon testing the charge circuit, we now have a healthy 20 volts showing on the in-line ameter.
And a fully functional laptop again.
