M1 MacBook Air not charging or turning on. It was only taking 5 volts, where it ought be 20 volts.
With the logic board removed and on the bench, power was applied to it under thermal imaging. The imaging showed a shorted CD3217 IC.
For each USB-C port there is one of these chips. If one isn’t working, the other(s) won’t either as they must all communicate with each other.
The faulty chip was removed, another taken from a similar logicboard, the old solder removed, new solder balls applied, the chip was then soldered into place.
We now have 20 volts on both ports, with the Mac now charging and turning on again.
